Routine vehicle maintenance can be a pain. But it’s more important than ever to get the works done on your vehicle that you need in a timely manner. Having routine maintenance like oil changes, fluid changes, etc., is important.

But how often does your vehicle need a tune-up? It can depend a little on the car that you are driving. If you are driving an older car, a tune-up used to be recommended about every 30,000 miles.

A tune-up is a more than just an oil change. Although most tune-ups do include an oil change, they also include a few additional items like engine air filter, and spark plugs.

A tune-up is a good thing to do and most people’s first choice when a car starts running poorly. Other signs of a worn out spark plug includes misfiring, lack or power of poor fuel economy. If you are experiencing engine issues like rough idling or hard starting, this may be one of the first places that you look.

The type of spark plug that you or your mechanic uses can also help determine how often you need a tune up. Iridium or platinum-tipped spark plugs can last from 50,000 to as much as 120,000 miles. Check the manufacturer’s information for the precise timing.

In older cars, a tune-up may replace ignition wires, distributor cap and rotor. Newer cars typically don’t have those items.

The fuel filter is also a part of the tune up. For example, some cars list specifically when the fuel filter needs to be replaced, i.e., every 30,000 miles. Other vehicles may not even list the fuel filter. Do your homework. If in doubt, replace.

The air filter is an easy one to change, one you may even do yourself. This is how your car breathes so you don’t want to have any dirt or dust on the filter. It’s recommended to be replaced every 15,000 to 30,000 miles. You can do a visual inspection to see when this needs to be replaced.
